The exterior of the house
The Department of Solar Energy of the United States created a contest to challenge students to build a house entirely powered by solar energy. Among the charges proposed, the project would necessarily have to be efficient, affordable, fully functional and attractive.
The winner would build the home more functional and customer at a cost compatible with the reality of consumers. One of the houses that drew the most public attention, though in the eighth, was assembled by two universities: the Architecture Institute of Southern California (SCI-Arc) and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
The project was called CHIP (Hyper-Insulated Compact Prototype) and defies all current concepts of architecture and engineering in relation to solar-powered homes. It has the external shape of a lozenge, and the interior has several levels, resembling in some ways, an amphitheater.
Compact mobile
The power house is provided by 45 photovoltaic panels mounted on the ceiling (which resembles a set of white pads). The power management is done through an application for the iPad (called eGauge). He is also responsible for producing detailed reports of consumption of the house.
When there are people within the structure, eGauge is able to delete all lights and make the window is closed. In addition, the lighting and entertainment of the structure is controlled by a system produced for the Xbox 360 Kinect.
Thus, the user can enable and disable such devices by gestures. The total space of the environment is 69.67 meters square and is divided into environments according to their level, with the "room" being the highest quarter. The furnishings inside are embedded so as to optimize the space, rather like a jigsaw puzzle.
In general, all the furniture is modular, aiming to utilize more space. For example, the chairs when not in use, can be embedded in the wall. The table is completely removable.

REDUCING GLOBAL WARMING
A group of university students in England announced a development project to address the problems of global warming. The idea is simple: a balloon drop of nearly 300 meters in diameter that would rise into the stratosphere, allowing a hose about 25 km long played a special reflective substance that would cause the sun's heat was returned to space.
The SPICE project (Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering), as it is called, may sound completely crazy to some, but the team seems confident students. In the information released by the group's website, the idea was based on which to simulate a natural event that can also reflect the sun, volcanic explosions, which cast metal particles in the sky.
Although the project is promising in many respects, there are several tests to be made. According to the team, an experiment on a smaller scale, with a smaller balloon would rise only 1 km, must be done until next month, only to be done in real size, on success.
he group also said that the SPICE project is just a contingency plan, necessary if the government and industry fail to drastically reduce their pollution. The question is whether a chemical used for testing can bring harmful side effects.
